Kia ora koutou, a very warm welcome to our first @Otago for 2025! This year we’re celebrating some special milestones – the 150th anniversary of the Otago Medical School, and 75 years of the School of Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Sciences. In this issue, we’re sharing stories about our inspirational medical and physical education alumni, showcasing photos from across the decades and looking to the future with new senior leadership.

Bringing care to the furthest corners of the world
Establishing health programmes in remote areas of Indonesia and Uganda, Drs Dave Jenkins and Nick Laing have dedicated their careers to improving health outcomes in rural communities and providing care in some of the world’s most remote regions.

Alumni honoured for trailblazing contributions to their communities
The exceptional service of alumni and staff was honoured at New Year, including leaders in health; Professor Helen Pilmore, Emeritus Professors Murray Thomson and Murray Tilyard, Dr Margot Skinner, Dr Catherine Ferguson, Professor Louise Parr-Brownlie, Dr Malcolm Legget and Associate Professor Tristram Ingham.

Your story: Working with passion
We managed to catch Dr Bruce Hamilton, former High Performance Sport NZ and Olympic Health team lead, while he was walking Te Araroa, The Long Pathway. An Otago physical education and medical graduate, Bruce talks about his life-changing time at Otago, three very different Olympics, raising awareness of Huntington’s Disease, and his decision to walk away from his dream job.

University Snapshot
For former Chancellor Stephen Higgs and Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Helen Nicholson, who both received Honorary Degrees from Otago in December, their connections with alumni provided many special memories over the years.
Also recognised with Honorary Degrees for their outstanding contribution to their professions, were Otago Medical School alumnus, neuroscientist Sir Richard Faull, and the first woman to be Dean of the Otago Medical School, Dame Linda Holloway.

As well as reconnecting and learning about University developments, events in Sydney and Auckland gave our alumni the exclusive chance to hear from, meet and chat with Highlanders’ coaches and management.

Dean of Otago Business School, Professor Maree Thyne, has been elected President of the Australian and New Zealand Marketing Academy. Ngā mihi nui to our four alumni who are Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year finalists: Professor Bev Lawton ONZM (Ngāti Porou), Emma Lewisham, Professor Simon Malpas and Deborah Manning ONZM.
