Vision 2040 – a new strategic direction for the University of Otago 

In February, the University launched the interim final version of Vision 2040, a new strategic direction to guide Otago into the future. Following this, a proposed new visual identity to align with the Vision has been sent to alumni, students and staff for consultation, and we encourage you to take part.

Christchurch celebrates 50 years of education and excellence 

Kia Mau – a call to come together and hold tight to one and all - is the theme for the Christchurch campus’ 50th anniversary this year, and the symbol for the celebration is the Pākē, a specially woven cloak representing key values, worn here by Christchurch Dean, Professor Suzanne Pitama (Ngāti Kahungunu/Ngāti Whare).

Mahi tahi – working together at the heart of New Year Honours 

An inspirational group of 24 alumni and staff received New Year Honours for their exceptional contribution and service to a wide range of professions, communities and areas of interest. A common theme in their stories is how humbled they felt to be recognised and how success is always about working together.

Sophia Charter display highlights commitment to student wellbeing

The Dunedin community joined with family and friends of Sophia Crestani, to launch a new display in Otago’s Ōtepoti Link outlining the aims of The Sophia Charter. The Charter was created following the tragic death of Sophia at a flat party in 2019 and is a commitment to reducing harm and enhancing student wellbeing. An extraordinary life journey has taken renowned conservationist and educator John Darby from orphanages in the UK during wartime to Assistant Director of the Otago Museum, Honorary Lecturer in Zoology at the University of Otago and champion of the region’s rare and vulnerable wildlife.

Donor-funded alumni scholarships were celebrated at a campus function recently. First-year alumni scholarship recipients joined together to meet other scholarship winners at a special welcome from many senior University staff and the team from Development and Alumni Relations.

University Snapshot

Over the next five years, Te Rōpū Rangahau Hauora a Eru Pōmare at the University of Otago, Wellington, will partner with three Māori community organisations, alongside international Indigenous collaborators, to promote traditional whānau models of wellbeing for pēpi, tamariki and whānau. The group received $43 million for the initiative via a LEGO Foundation Build a World of Play Challenge.

To celebrate 150 years of Law at Otago, we thought we’d bring a well-known face from the past back to life with colour. In 1893 Ethel Benjamin was the first woman to be admitted to law school in Australasia and in 1897 became the first female lawyer to appear as counsel in any case in the British Empire. Here are some photographs of Ethel Benjamin that we have colourised using a wee bit of technical magic.

The sun shone for alumni, students and staff, along with members of the community, who turned out for February’s Clocktower picnic on the Dunedin campus and the Christchurch 50th anniversary picnic in the Botanic Gardens in March. It was also wonderful to welcome alumni to the Highlanders Coaches’ Breakfast in Invercargill last week.
