Graduation Process & Information

Congratulations on your upcoming graduation! We would like to welcome you to the University of Otago alumni community. An alumnus or alumna is a man or woman who has graduated from a school. In completing your qualification at the University of Otago, you have become one of our many important alumni.

Graduation is an exciting time and the beginning of a new chapter in your life. Many of you will have family and friends joining you for the celebration, and planning their visit can be a lot of work. We want to make this as easy as possible for you (or the family member organising for you!).

Take a look at the checklist below and the helpful links that will guide you to creating a fantastic graduation experience.

  • ☑ Celebrate the news of your graduation with friends
  • ☑ Make sure you get all the ceremony information (regalia, collecting guest tickets).
  • ☑ Questions? Visit the graduation page.
  • ☑ Book a hotel/motel well in advance, places fill up quickly!
  • ☑ Visit Tourism Dunedin’s accommodation page to find the best place for your family. Prices, amenities, and TripAdvisor reviews are listed for each hotel/motel and there is a link to book the accommodation when you have made a decision.
  • ☑ Book a restaurant for dinner well in advance, places fill up quickly!
  • ☑ Visit Tourism Dunedin’s restaurant page to find a place for your celebratory dinner. There is a description, reviews, and a phone number for each restaurant.
  • ☑ The decision can be difficult so a good place to start is to look at 52 Restaurants in 52 Weeks. NZ MasterChef Finalist Stu Todd visited 52 Dunedin restaurants over a year and wrote a review for each one.
  • ☑ Check out activities to do before and after graduation day
  • ☑ When your family and friends are here for multiple days, what do you do with them? Tourism Dunedin has solved your problem with their What To See & Do page. There are descriptions of the activities and a link if there is any booking involved.
  • ☑ Pick-up your tickets and regalia; you will receive an email from the Graduation Office about this.
  • ☑ Attend the Pre-Graduation Brunch
☑ Have a wonderful graduation day!

Choosing a flat up all those steps was a great idea until I had to shift my furniture.

Did you know the Richardson Building won an architectural award for modernism in 1983?

Double glazing installed in Dundas St flat. Students protest against gentrification.

Dunedin’s summer always occurs during exams.

Fish & chips contain all the important food groups: fat, salt, starch and crunchy bits.

I have located the missing tutorial notes. ALL IS WELL!

Icecream tastes so much better in Woodhaugh Garden.

It’s wonderful how Postgraduates reclaim the library between semesters.

Leith Street is the classy alternative to Castle Street.

My flat doesn’t have a fridge. Superfluous.

My lecturer thinks an hour of reading per night is reasonable. So do the other seven.

My new student ID card makes me look bright orange like Tom Jones. Apparently it’s not unusual.

North East Valley – it’s not just a place, it’s a lifestyle.

Stay warm with stripy thermal underwear. The stripes rub together to create heat friction.

Take a minute to read the graffiti on a library desk.

The Archway lecture theatre spins around and throws you out in the wrong direction!

World-leading Science faculty but still no cure for the Fresher Flu!
